Beta Testers

UTest Review: Legit or Scam

UTest by Applause is a site that hires freelancers to perform software tests and offer their feedback. You can join the site as a “Light User” or a “Full User”. As a light user, you’ll only join the test community to perform different types of test on software, apps, and websites. However, if you’re a full user, you’ll have the opportunity to do the paid project and also perform tests on software, apps, and websites.

How to Become a Tester:

  1. The company is always looking for passionate or professional freelancers to perform software tests. You can also be a designer, or just interested in web and mobile testing.
  2. The site hires testers worldwide to help them test web, desktop, and mobile applications.
  3. Register with the company on the tester signup page.
  4. You’ll need to complete all fields in the form as accurately as possible. This helps the company to match you with available tests.
  5. To register as a tester it is free and there are no membership fees to pay.
  6. You can only have 1 account with the company. Furthermore, you’re not allowed to use the account of another tester. If you’re caught with more than one account or using another person’s account, you’ll be banned from the company.

What Are The Requirements to Become a uTester?

  1. You must be 18 years of age to join the company as a software tester.
  2. You don’t need any previous experience to become a tester.
  3. However, if you’re a software QA professional this helps.
  4. Each project that you work on is closely monitored by the staff. This includes the bug reporting and bug approvals process during the test.
  5. The better testers are paid a higher rate by the company and offered the majority of the projects.
  6. If a tester is employed full time, it is their responsibility to check with their employer to make sure they aren’t violating any rules of the company they work for.

How You Are Invited to Paid Projects:

  1. The paid project is by supply and demand. This all depends on the availability of the projects and the criteria of the customer. If you don’t fit the profile, you’ll not be invited to join the test project.
  2. Only testers that are invited to the test project can participate. If you’re not invited, then you’ll need to wait until there is a project available that fits your profile.
  3. You’ll be invited into the “Sandbox Program” automatically. This is open to a select number of testers and depends on the current project demand.
  4. If you do well in the Sandbox Project, you’ll start to receive more invitations to participate in more projects. Normally, this takes 4 weeks to receive an invitation after your first project was completed.
  5. It’s important to keep your profile information updated at all times. If your profile is accurate and complete, you’ll have more chances to join testing projects.

How Does the Company Pay?

  1. You’ll earn money for each bug you’ve identified and it has been approved. Furthermore, you’re paid for test cases, surveys and other types of test cycles.
  2. Each test cycle pays a different amount. Furthermore, your pay scale is determined by your test rating. Therefore, a Gold, Silver or Bronze tester makes a higher pay rate than a new tester. As you take more tests you’ll move up in rank and earn higher pay for your completed tests.
  3. Each user test varies in price and your skill level as a tester. The paid price for each test accepted is $10 to $50. The higher paid skilled testers earn around $1000 to $4000 a month working for the company full time.
  4. The company pays you by PayPal or Payoneer. They normally pay on the 15th and 30th of each month.

How to Become a Gold Tester:

  1. It is best to focus on quality and not the quantity of the test you do. Spend your time and do the best job possible. If you rush through the test and don’t supply quality answers, you’ll not be promoted to a higher testing level.
  2. It’s important to always improve your performance when taking the tests.
  3. You’ll need to continue earning and contributing to the site. It is a good idea if you join the uTest Forums. There you should read about the University courses the company has posted an answer thread in the forums.
  4. If you have any questions, make sure you ask them on the uTest forum. There are always other testers or the forum moderator there to answer your questions.

Maintaining Your Profile:

  1. When signing up with the company, you’re asked some basic profile questions. Fill in each answer completely and don’t skip any.
  2. If you have purchased a new device or updated your OS software, don’t forget to update your user profile to reflect these changes.
  3. If you can’t find your device or OS, you’ll need to go to the Software testing forum and create a new post. This informs the company about your problem so they can help you find a solution.
  4. In your profile select your project preferences.
  5. Complete your testing experiences and tell the company what you know or have done in the past. This is important to the company so they can match you up with tests that you’re experienced to take.
  6. Fill in all your hardware and software information for your computers and phones. If you have a tablet you should let the company know about it. This is important for the different tests you’ll take.
  7. It is best to have at least 90% of your profile complete.
  8. Each time something changes in your profile, you’ll need to update your profile on the site to reflect these changes.

Working at UTest:

  • Pros:

  1. There is no mandatory work on the site; you can work when you’re available.
  2. The forum helps new testers learn the job and ask questions.
  3. The site offers online training so that you can understand how to do the job and what is expected of you.
  4. A few of the testing cycles are simple and quick. However, you need the right device and live in the right country or state for the test.
  5. This is a good company to work for if it’s your first time being a tester. The company will help you learn what is expected of being a tester and build your confidence.
  6. If you can find bugs and other problems, you can earn a decent income each month for testing the software.
  7. You have a great opportunity to excel in the company if you’re extremely proficient and can find high-value bugs.
  • Cons:

  1. The company can reject your test case or the defects you’ve found because they aren’t what was expected of the test.
  2. It is hard to make decent money from the site. This site can’t be used for full-time work. This is more of a part-time job.
  3. Many of the test descriptions are incomplete and the test organizers don’t understand how complex the test was or what was needed to be done.
  4. A few times there were inconsistencies in being paid, however, the person in charge would work with you by email.
  5. Many projects are just for manual testers.
  6. A few tests that have been done, don’t have bugs to report, therefore you waste your time.
  7. After spending many hours on a test, it’s rejected and you’re not paid.
  8. The system is unorganized and many of the test instructions are confusing.
  9. It takes a lot of time to find a few bugs in the software. Some of the value versus deep bugs can lead to contention between you and the customers.

This company hires freelancers worldwide to join their testing community. To become a tester, you’ll need to register with the company and complete your profile image. It is important that you participate in the Sandbox Project and complete this project. Depending on how well you do in this project will determine how many tests you’re invited to.

  1. I registered with this platform, then they sent me 3 tests in a week, which were all titled “Paid Test Cycles”. Then I started doing all of them and spent an average of 5 hours for each of them. I was emailing them and asking on forums and everything to ensure I will be paid my efforts, as there was no info on payment at all, and they said we should not talk about payment on project chats, but they never cared to even answer my emails. Then when the projects closed, I got a feedback mentioning: “…if this was a paid cycle then we would not accept this bug”; then that is when and how I understood that my 15 hours of testing was for free for their customers after a misleading title. And if the test was not for 3rd party websites, I might have thought that was training and might not be paid; but if they send you test for 3rd party websites, of course they are paid for it, and not forwarding the payment to testers. Also, just to clarify that my feedback was very positive, for all projects and my bugs approved; and based on that I should be paid. And the most annoying thing is that, until now I am still sending them emails just asking them why I have got an invitation email stating “Paid test cycles”, but they do not even bother to acknowledge my email , apart from the automated response on submission. Then I simply concluded that uTest is a scam and should be, by now, closed by the authorities.
This is to be avoided by all cost!!!
But I am not letting my 15hours be stay in their pocket, I will do everything in my power, to get this clarified
