Scrap Review 2019: Legit or Scam

Scrap is a magazine that is published on a bimonthly basis. The magazine is part of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) and it is a Washington D.C. based trade association. Currently, there are 21 chapters that represent around 1,300 companies that operate in over 4,000 locations in the United States and 34 other countries worldwide. These companies process and recycle different scrap commodities such as metals, papers, glass, rubber, electronics, plastics, and textiles. The magazine will accept letters, articles, illustrations, photos, and editorial submissions. Just keep in mind if you submit any type of letter or article to the site, the editors of the site will review the article before it is published in their magazine.

How Does It Work?

  1. The site accepts submission for any freelance writer or photographer.
  2. Articles need to be written in English and the editors look for grammar, spelling, sentence structure, punctuation, and a good comprehension of the English language.
  3. Articles should be about the recycling industry or other topics that interest ISRI members.
  4. If you submit an article you must include your name, address, and phone number.
  5. The site does not accept any anonymous submissions.
  6. Do not submit articles that personally attack a person or industry.
  7. Like all writing sites or magazines, they will not accept an article that is filled with hate or foul language.
  8. Do not submit articles that are defamatory, inconsistent with the general purpose of the magazine or that are salacious.
  9. If your article is related to pending litigation or partisan politics the editors will review the article closely before it is ever published in the magazine.
  10. All articles submitted to the magazine are closely edited for the length of the article, the subject, content and the style of the article.
  11. All advertisements, commentary, articles, and editorial submission will be reviewed by the editors and it is their sole discretion if they accept or reject your submission.

Freelance Writers, Photographers, and Illustrators Guidelines:

  1. Keep in mind that the magazine is predominantly staff-written.
  2. The magazine does hire freelance writers.
  3. Most of the writing assignments are multisource features.
  4. You may receive an assignment to write about new scrap processing and handling equipment, new market trends, management, and operational techniques, or even about adapting new regulations and legislation.
  5. You will need to be able to work alone, do your own research, meet the deadline, and submit your article back to the magazine on time.
  6. They are looking for people who can complete the assignments and edit the articles if needed.
  7. Each assignment will have a word count, description of the article they want to be written, and be rated on the difficulty of the article.
  8. On occasion, the magazine will hire photographers and illustrators.
  9. Photographic assignments will be to take a high-resolution color image of operating equipment, personnel, processing and consuming facilities.
  10. The magazine will purchase the images for unlimited-use rights.
  11. Scrap also hires illustrators.
  12. The illustrations must be four-color designs that will accompany a specific article.
  13. The company will give the illustrator, concept suggestions for their illustrations.

How To Become A Freelance Writer:

  1. You will need to write a letter of interest and submit the letter by email or mail to the Editorial Director Rachel H Pollack.
  2. You will also need to submit two reported, multiple-source stories with your letter.
  3. The editor will review your letter and read your articles.
  4. If you fit the guideline the editor will contact you if an assignment is available.
  5. Keep in mind that the magazine does not always use freelance writers and it could be difficult to receive an assignment.
  6. The magazine only selects the best writers to write for them.

How Are You Paid?

  1. Once the article, photograph or illustration has been accepted the company will pay you for your work.
  2. The amount of pay received will depend on the assignment.
  3. Normally the company pays $600 to $1000 for the assignments.
  4. You will receive a credit line if your article, photograph or illustration has been published in the magazine.
  5. It does not say how the company sends you your payment. They will discuss the terms of payment once your article has been accepted for publication.

This is a legitimate company to write for. The company pays you when your article, photograph or illustration is published in their magazine. Keep in mind the company has its own staff writers, but they do hire freelance writers, photographers, or illustrators from time to time. In order to be considered, you must write a letter to the company and submit two articles, sample photos or illustrations. The editor of the magazine will review your submissions and get back to you. Keep in mind the site is looking for excellent witting skills, a person who can handle the assignment, meet deadlines, and complete the work on time. This is an excellent opportunity to write for a magazine and get your name out there as a freelance writer.
